American Legion Membership Requirements:

To be eligible for membership in The American Legion, you must meet one of the following criteria:

  • Served honorably during an eligible war era

  • Be on active duty today, serving honorably

  • Have served federal active duty in the United States Armed Forces since December 7, 1941, and have been honorably discharged or are still serving

What are the Active Duty Service Eligibility Dates?

Membership is based on period of service, not place of service. Eligible war eras include:

  • World War I: April 6, 1917 to November 11, 1918

  • World War II: December 7, 1941 to December 31, 1946

  • Korea: June 25, 1950 to January 31, 1955

  • Vietnam: February 28, 1961 to May 7, 1975

  • Lebanon & Grenada: August 24, 1982 to July 31, 1984

  • Panama: December 20, 1989 to January 31, 1990

However, some combat operations are not recognized by the U.S. government as a period of war, such as the Cold War, Libyan Conflict, and Persian Gulf Conflicts. Those who served during these timeframes are not eligible for membership, unless a resolution passed by the American Legion's National Executive Committee is enacted.

To transfer to a new post, you can visit the post and speak with an officer. You'll need to provide your 9-digit member ID and a copy of your DD214 or similar document to verify your eligibility.
